Demodex & Inflammation

When your skin’s ecosystem needs some attention.

Demodex mites are microscopic organisms that naturally live in the hair follicles and oil glands of our skin. Most of the time, they coexist with us without causing a problem. In some people with rosacea, however, higher numbers of Demodex or changes in the skin environment around them may be associated with increased inflammation and immune activity. This can contribute to the redness, sensitivity, bumps and irritation that some rosacea-prone skin experiences.

It’s not about being “dirty” or having poor skin hygiene, Demodex are a normal part of the skin microbiome, and everyone has them. The goal is to understand when the balance may have shifted and whether this could be contributing to your particular pattern of rosacea. This is also why we don't believe in simply scrubbing, stripping or over-cleansing reactive skin; disrupting the skin barrier can create another source of inflammation.

Our approach is about calming the inflammatory environment and supporting a healthier skin ecosystem. Depending on what we're seeing, this may involve carefully selected home care, gentle professional treatments and ingredients that support the skin barrier while avoiding unnecessary irritation. Where Demodex overgrowth is strongly suspected or symptoms are persistent, we may also recommend medical assessment, as targeted prescription treatment can be appropriate. There’s no judgement here, just a plan to understand what your skin is doing and help get it back to a calmer, healthier place.

When the skin’s natural ecosystem becomes part of the inflammatory picture.

We don't fight reactive skin - we calm it first. When inflammation and Demodex may be contributing to your rosacea, our focus is on reducing irritation, supporting the skin barrier and creating a healthier environment for your skin to function properly. Where medical treatment is needed, we'll tell you, because knowing when not to treat is just as important as knowing what to treat.

LED Light Therapy

Calming inflammation while supporting healthier skin.

When Demodex and inflammation are part of the rosacea picture, our priority is to calm the skin rather than stimulate it further. LED is a beautiful option because the appropriate wavelength of light can influence cellular activity, helping to reduce inflammatory signalling and support the skin’s natural repair processes. It gives reactive skin support without the friction, exfoliation or heat that can trigger another flare.

But with rosacea, what happens between treatments is just as important as what happens in the treatment room. A consistent, carefully selected home-care routine is paramount. We want to protect and rebuild the skin barrier, minimise irritation and avoid the cycle of over-cleansing, over-exfoliating and constantly changing products. Where Demodex overgrowth is suspected, professional medical treatment may also be required, and we’ll let you know when it’s time to involve your GP or dermatologist.

Our goal is to create calm, resilient skin that is better able to manage its environment. LED provides the in-clinic support, while your home care does the everyday work of maintaining that progress. Together, they create a much more sustainable approach to managing reactive, rosacea-prone skin.

Circadia Rosacea Support

Calm the inflammation. Support the barrier. Address the Demodex connection.

Circadia’s dedicated rosacea range gives us targeted tools to help calm redness and inflammation, support the skin barrier and address some of the factors that can contribute to reactive skin. Rose-Ease Relief Cream is particularly valuable when Demodex may be part of the picture, helping to soothe inflammation and support barrier function while using cinnamon-derived ingredients to help discourage Demodex activity.

For more targeted support, Circadia Rosacea Serum can be incorporated into your professional treatment plan to help calm irritated, rosacea-prone skin while supporting the management of Demodex. We can then select additional calming and barrier-supportive products according to what your skin needs, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

And this is where your home care becomes paramount. Rosacea needs consistent support between treatments, not just an occasional treatment in the clinic. By using the right products consistently, protecting your barrier and avoiding unnecessary irritation, we can help create a calmer, more resilient skin environment and better support the progress we make in the treatment room.
